Grant Wells
Where have you worked and over what time period?
I started with The Advocate newspaper in northwest Tasmania in 1982 as a darkroom assistant and worked my way up to the position of Chief Photographer.
How did you get into press photography - what was your big break?
There was no "big break" just hard work and patience…watching, listening, learning… waiting for an editorial photography position to open up.
What is your favourite photograph of all those you have taken and why?
Choosing a favourite photo from 30+ years of work is almost impossible. Like your children, each is special in its own way. One I am quite proud of is an image of Prince Charles joking with mine workers at Queenstown. Being very new to news photography, it was quite intimidating seeing the international media (dripping in camera gear) pile off the media coach, so the satisfaction of getting the shot has stayed with me.
What is the biggest change you've seen in press photography over your career?
I think the biggest change has been the technology: from black and white to colour and then digital. Advances in camera technology have also meant it is far easier to get the job done.
What was the first camera you used and what camera do you use now?
My first work camera was a Nikon FM2 with a small selection of cheap lenses. I now use 2 Canon 7DMKII bodies with a range of professional lenses.
